Phenol Free & BPA Free Receipt Paper

Uncategorized | 0 comments

BPA has been used as a coating on the paper because it provides better stability and heat resistance. These properties ensure the thermal paper changes color when exposed to heat without being flammable. This also means that receipt papers do not need ink to work, and print faster. Phenol-Free is a thermal paper made without the use of Bisphenol A Bisphenol S, or other phenol based chemicals. Recent trends have retailers switching to phenol-free or BPA free paper due to possible health effects that can result after prolonged handling of the paper.

What are the health risks?

Although controversial, it is a concern that BPA may be a endocrine disruptor and in large quantities can interfere with hormones’ functions in the body.  A study carried out by Springer-Verlag showed  a person who handles receipt paper for ten hours per day is exposed to 71 μg of BPA on average per day. This amount is 42 times less than the tolerable daily intake (TDI), or the estimated amount of BPA a person can be exposed to on a daily basis throughout their lifetime without a significant health risk. This however is dependent on skin conditions. Dry skin is less likely to carry high amounts of the chemicals than skin with recently applied lotion or hand cream because of increase permeability. It is worth noting that this study focused on those who handle the paper extremely frequently.

What is the alternative?

Most commonly a BPA-Free paper is used. This is the type of paper without BPS, but the problem is that BPS has many of the same properties as BPA. The other option is phenol-free paper that is coated with a urea-based chemical. Urea-based compounds do not trigger the same hormone-altering effects. The print quality for Urea-Based alternatives is more crisp and will print darker, but the downside is that its more expensive.

Every business owner will have different preferences when it comes to paper type. If you’re concerned about the effects of phenol-based chemicals in your receipt paper talk to us about your options. If you’re looking for a budget friendly solution your best choice is to stick with standard paper as it is unlikely that it will cause adverse health effects.

To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.
